Dear Friends,
We wanted to share some thoughts that we feel are worth reflecting on from time to time. They are certainly not new, but worth bringing back into focus occasionally. For us, they are a bit of a pledge and the main reason we came together in the first place.
Music making requires more than talent and technique—it thrives on respect, connection, and time—often a luxury for a freelance musician. When the three of us discussed getting together to make music on a more regular basis, we very consciously decided to step back a bit and focus on a rehearsal process grounded in patience, deep listening, and mutual understanding - and lots of time together.
Unhurried
Zarek Trio is very much committed to a slow approach. Unhurried practice allows us to create a space where each voice—violin, viola da gamba, and keyboard—can be fully explored, individually and as part of a greater whole. And it is always about finding the balance between historical authenticity and personal expression, crafting interpretations that feel alive and relevant today.
Each of us brings their own story, perspective, and expertise to the table. Respectful collaboration means valuing those differences, knowing that they enrich our music-making. We approach each piece with open minds, ready to hear not only the notes on the page but also each other’s ideas and insights.
Some of our most rewarding moments come from unexpected discoveries we make during unhurried rehearsals. Whether it’s finding a subtle phrasing that transforms a melody or uncovering a historical detail that sparks our imaginations, these small breakthroughs remind us why we love what we do.
Our approach gives us the time to foster the trust and synergy that define every ZAREKtrio performance. And ultimately, the joy of sharing the result of this process with you is what matters most.
With warmest wishes,
Rebecca, Oliver John and Jan
